CLASS QUESTIONS

  • Sparring is a simulated "fight" with a partner chosen loosely based on your height, physique, and level of experience. At EP Martial Arts, we view sparring as an essential part of learning martial arts because it gives students the ability to practice everything they've learned in a generally safe context.

With that said, it's important to note that sparring should NOT be like a real fight.

Sparring partners rely on each other to better their skills and coordination, so getting hurt needlessly doesn't help anyone. For that purpose, we typically prioritize technical sparring in classes while we may spar harder for fight camps.

Regardless, we always encourage our students to communicate openly to their sparring partners about how hard/not hard they want to go.

  • The safety of our students has been a priority of ours since day one. To that end, students aren't allowed to spar if they lack either of the following:

    • Jock cup

    • Mouth guard

If you don't have equipment like gloves, headgear, hand-wraps or shin guards, we have plenty of spares you can use.

  • We get it, stuff happens! If you need to cancel, we ask that you cancel within 24 hours of the class so your instructor will know ahead of time. Late cancellations will be non-refundable.

  • Absolutely! You can use the class bundle to try any of our martial arts classes to get a sense of what you like.

  • This is totally understandable! Even though we view sparring as a vital component towards developing one's technique and awareness, even experienced fighters are cautious of getting hurt, so you're not alone!

As a gym, we hold the safety of our students to a high standard. In keeping with that standard, our policy is that we typically don't allow new students to spar within their first year, unless they have previous martial arts experience.

If you're feeling uneasy about gloving up and sparring, we encourage you to do one of the following:

    • Discuss with the instructor if you could use the heavy bag, or get a pad session instead.

    • If you decide to spar, communicate openly with your sparring partners about how hard/soft you want to go, especially if you have any injuries and/or respiratory conditions like asthma.

MEMBERSHIP QUESTIONS

  • We'll be sorry to see you go, but we understand this may happen. If you need to cancel your membership, please send us an email from your Membership page, and we can work with you from there.

  • No, we won’t allow members to compete without signing up for the Fight Team membership. Aside from safety being our top priority, we do this for two reasons:

    • Fighting is inherently dangerous and can result in a wide range of injuries.

    • Preparing for a fight or tournament requires even higher levels of dedication towards training, including weight-loss and other aspects of conditioning.

If you have the drive and motivation to compete, then the Fight Team membership is for you. Before you sign up, please speak with your head coach so they can better assess your goals.

By signing up for the Fight Team membership, you’ll officially be a part of our Fight Team league. You’ll gain unlimited access to any classes you want, as well as special Fight Team training days and fight camps.

  • Of course! You'll be able to do that in your member dashboard when you log in.
